Branch offers a self-service tool to file 1099-NEC/K forms for your organization. Branch collects W-9 information and delivery preferences directly from your workers, verifies their TINs with the IRS, and gives them access to their own tax profile—so less information gathering falls to your admin team.
The tool allows you to:
- Review worker tax information and TIN verification status.
- Fill in details for workers Branch can't collect directly.
- Submit filings to federal and state tax authorities.
- Correct or access forms after submission.
You can also add earnings paid outside of Branch and file 1099-NEC/K forms for workers who never created a Branch account.
Steps to File 1099-NEC/K Forms
1. Submit Business Information
Once 1099-NEC/K tax filing is enabled, go to the 1099 Taxes page under the Organization tab in Pay Admin and click Get Started to submit your business information, including your Company Name and Tax Identification Number (TIN).
This information appears on all 1099-NEC/K forms and must be verified with the IRS before workers can submit their own tax information. You'll only need to complete this step once, unless your business information changes.
2. Review TIN Verification Status
Branch collects W-9 information from every worker and verifies their name and TIN or EIN against IRS records through partner Zenwork, typically within a few minutes—though some verifications may stay pending longer depending on IRS response times.
When a verification comes back mismatched, Branch notifies the worker in the Branch app or Branch Direct and prompts them to correct their own name or TIN—you don't need to collect corrected information yourself. If you're integrated with Branch, subscribe to the TIN verification webhook to get the result as soon as it's available. Some customers use this to gate shift assignment or payouts for workers without a matched TIN; Branch doesn't pause payouts automatically, so that decision and its implementation are yours.
Use the Filing Status → Not Ready filter to see workers who exceed the IRS filing threshold based on the information you've provided but don't yet have a matched TIN.
You don't have to wait for every TIN to match before filing. At submission, you'll choose between filing only for verified workers or filing for all eligible workers—see step 5.
3. Fill In Any Missing Form Details
Workers with an active Branch account provide and maintain their own tax details, so in most cases you won't need to enter information on their behalf. You may still need to supply details through a CSV upload for workers who:
- Were paid outside of Branch.
- Were added to your roster but never created a Branch account.
- Closed their Branch account and can no longer access their tax profile.
- Have been prompted to complete their tax profile but haven't done so, and whose form you still need to file.
Required details include full name, EIN or TIN, address, and email address.
Important to Note:
- Workers must be added to your roster before you can submit their tax details.
- If your organization doesn't use Unified Onboarding, workers are prompted to complete their tax profile after onboarding rather than during it. Everything else works the same way.
- For CSV upload errors and troubleshooting, see Managing 1099-NEC/K Worker Tax Details and Special Filing Scenarios.
In Early January, Once Payouts Are Finalized
4. Review Payouts for Accuracy
Branch finalizes payouts for the tax year in early January. Until then, totals may change.
Review payouts by:
- Downloading a CSV from the 1099 Taxes tab to review payout totals.
- Updating non-Branch payouts so earnings are accurate.
- Alerting Branch Support of any discrepancies between Branch's totals and your system of record.
Use the Upload Records option to make changes. Workers can't change earnings or payout amounts—see 1099-NEC/K Worker Self-Service Guide for what's covered by worker self-service.
5. Submit Filings
Once worker information and earnings are confirmed, submit your filings. Choose one of two options:
- File for verified workers only — includes only workers with a matched TIN. This is the default and carries the lowest IRS risk.
- File for all eligible workers — also includes workers with a mismatched or pending TIN. You'll confirm this choice before submission.
Filing for workers with unmatched TINs may result in an IRS CP2100 notice and potential penalties—whether to do so is your organization's decision.
Once forms are filed and accepted, workers receive them according to their delivery preference—see 1099-NEC/K Worker Self-Service Guide for how that works.
Important Deadlines: see Getting Started with 1099-NEC/K Filing for the IRS furnishing deadline and filing freeze window that apply to your submission.
Post-Filing Steps
6. Process Corrections
If corrections are needed after filing, make updates from the 1099 Taxes tab—see 1099-NEC/K Form Corrections Guide for how to submit a correction and how worker-submitted corrections are reviewed and approved.
7. Download Forms
You can download individual 1099-NEC/K forms from the 1099 Taxes tab. For bulk downloads, contact your Account Manager.
