1099-NEC/K filing helps your organization meet IRS requirements for reporting compensation. This guide covers how to get started, what's required of you, and key deadlines.
How to Enroll
To enroll in 1099-NEC/K filing services, contact your Account Manager—see How do I enroll in 1099-NEC/K filing services? for enrollment details, cutoff timing, and re-enrollment.
How Responsibilities Are Divided
Branch collects and maintains, directly from your workers: W-9 information (legal name, address, TIN or EIN, filing type), form delivery preference, and TIN verification with the IRS.
Your organization is responsible for: reviewing worker information and earnings for accuracy, adding any earnings paid outside of Branch, supplying details for workers without a Branch account, approving corrections (see 1099-NEC/K Form Corrections Guide), and submitting your filings. Branch doesn't file automatically.
Criteria for Filing
Before submitting, make sure:
- Earnings are accurate — review via the CSV download or individual worker details, against your own system of record.
- Form fields are complete — workers with missing details appear under the Not Ready filter; see How do I file a 1099-NEC/K form? for how to fill in missing details.
- You've decided how to handle unmatched TINs — file for verified workers only, or for all eligible workers.
Filing Deadlines
The IRS sets a deadline each year for furnishing and filing 1099-NEC/K forms. Submit through Branch at least two business days ahead of it—forms typically take one to two business days to be accepted, and the IRS usually freezes filing until mid-January.
How Workers Receive Their Forms
Workers receive their 1099-NEC/K forms according to their own delivery preference—see 1099-NEC/K Worker Self-Service Guide for how they set this preference and what they see at tax time.
How Your Organization Receives Forms
Download individual 1099-NEC/K forms from the 1099 Taxes page—see How do I file a 1099-NEC/K form? for bulk-download instructions.
IRS Filing Threshold
The filing threshold depends on the form type and tax year, and federal thresholds are subject to change. Branch uses the lowest state or federal threshold to set a global threshold by form type, which can shift year over year as laws change. Branch applies this threshold against a worker's gross annual pay—payouts sent through Branch plus any non-Branch payouts you add—to determine who qualifies for filing. Gross pay includes any adjustments you may pass through with disbursements metadata. Review worker earnings in Branch against your system of record for accuracy.
